This is how I now make my brown rice. I use an electric stove (ugh) but I think this will also work with quite well with gas. I heat the pot to be used on the stove and add boiling water. I take the desired quantity of rice and add it to the boiling water. I then let the rice come back up to the boil and then I turn the stove off! I just let the rice soak for about 3/4 of an hour in the hot water with the pot covered. Voila! Perfect rice, and a lot less electricity used to boot. If you have a gas cooker then it might be better to use a pot with a tighter lid, like a pressure cooker. You can add salt to the water if you like. If you are using something like white basmati rice then you only need to leave the rice to soak for about 20 minutes. The grains seem to come out a lot fluffier than with the boiling method, and once you get used to using the right amount of water you will find you don't even have to strain the rice, it has absorbed all the water.
